Garage Door Not Working? Check This Common Issue First
If your garage door suddenly stops working, don’t panic. Before calling a professional, there’s one simple and incredibly common issue you can check yourself: the safety sensor alignment.
Most modern garage doors have safety sensors located near the bottom of the door tracks. These sensors send an invisible beam across the door opening to prevent the door from closing if something (like a child, pet, or object) is in the way. If these sensors are misaligned or blocked, your garage door may refuse to close or reverse automatically.
Here’s what to look for:
Blinking lights on one or both sensors
Dirty lenses—wipe them clean with a soft cloth
Obstructions like leaves, tools, or debris blocking the beam
Loose wires or mounts—make sure everything is securely fastened and pointed directly at the other sensor
This quick check can save you time and money. If you’ve inspected the sensors and the door still isn’t working, it might be time to call in the pros.
