A broken garage door spring is a common issue that can make your door unsafe or inoperable. Here are the key signs that indicate a broken spring:
1. Garage Door Won’t Open or Feels Heavy – If the door won’t open at all or is extremely heavy when lifting manually, the spring may be broken.
2. Loud Bang or Snap – If you heard a loud bang from your garage, it could have been the spring snapping.
3. Gaps in the Spring – Look at the torsion spring (above the door) or extension springs (on the sides). If there is a visible gap in the coil, the spring is broken.
4. Garage Door Opens a Few Inches and Stops – Some openers have force limits that prevent the door from opening if a spring is broken.
5. Crooked or Uneven Door – If one extension spring is broken, the door may lift unevenly or appear slanted.
6. Cables Appear Loose or Disconnected – A broken spring can cause the cables to lose tension or come off the pulleys.
7. Door Falls Quickly When Closing – Without a functioning spring, the door may close too fast because there’s no counterbalance.
A broken spring is dangerous to replace without the right tools and experience. If you need help with a replacement, Maverick Overhead Door can handle it for you!
